Competition news

Hanging Heaton Cup Final

Ollie Broadbent beat Dave ‘The Destroyer’ Barker 4&2 in the Hanging Heaton Cup. Both played some good golf in spells but the more experienced golfer came through in the end.

Well done to both guys getting to the final, a fantastic achievement for Dave who beat some big guns along the way.

Len Wright Trophy Final

The Colquhoun’s came out on top winning the Len Wright Trophy 6&5. It was always going to be difficult for Scot Minto to compete against the pair playing by himself due to his partner Paul Ratcliffe having a new hip...
Scot started strongly birding 3 of the first 5 to be 1up, but a couple of mistakes on 6 and 7 cost him and Derek and Scott took control.

Well done Scott and Derek.

Titus Newsome Shield

Another pupil came out on top in the Titus Newsome Shield. David Townend won with a nett 60, winning by 3 shots over Ian ‘The Golfaholic’ Hunter and Dave ‘The Bandit’ Floyd.

David has worked really hard over the season improving his game, great to see another pupil win but I can't take all the praise. Guys like David and Ollie have practised really hard and often to get to the level they are at. I can give them the advice to improve but without the correct work ethic, the turn around in anyone’s golf will take a lot longer than they want.

I am currently working out some winter offers for lesson packages. Just remember if you want to come on board and want to improve, the slogan is practice makes perfect. Unfortunately, I have not the expertise of Dazzling Darren the magician.

John Bell Trophy

Chris Smith beat Trevor Armitage in the final of the John Bell Trophy 3&2, both have played some great golf over the season, hopefully, now the handicap committee will reduce their handicaps!

Chris ‘s golf has improved over the summer and over the last month used the GC Quad in the simulator room to help him get the club in a stronger position at impact. Well done Chris hope you enjoy playing off 15 from now on....only joking pal!

Pro's news

20 Years Service

On the 19th October I will have been at the club 20 years, could have probably done a little less for murder.
Over the weekend of the 19th/20th, I will be running a couple of different competition formats...

Saturday will be a 9 hole 4BBB Stableford, tee slots will start from 7-30am with the last tee time at 3-30pm, you will be able to enter as many times as you like but can't play with the same person.

The cost will be £6 per pair for the 9 holes including various spot prizes during the day and refreshments too.
On the evening I will hold the presentation and I have booked Tony Fletcher to entertain us all performing the likes of Dean Martin, Micheal Buble and finishing with Elvis, hopefully, this will be well supported!

The competition will be open to all members of the club 5 day, Ladies, juniors and full members and you can also invite guests.

On Sunday the competition format will be a 4 person team over 18 holes with the best score and the worst score to count on every hole, a cruel format but it will be a Stableford competition. The cost will be £10 per team plus two’s and tee times from 8:00am.

I will be sending more info next week and will collect money and entries from Saturday 28th September.

Arriving on Monday will be all the latest PING demo equipment for any of our members to come and be fitted. The cost will be £30 for the hour.

Mixed Open at Wetherby

I was absent from Hanging Heaton on Sunday as I took the opportunity to enjoy a round at Wetherby in their Mixed Open. An enjoyable day out with Ms Past It Julie, Dr Golf and the Side Winder. Sadly we didn’t get into the prizes but Dr Golf did win a special award for a rather colourful sentence following a superb and long drive (sadly not in the right direction). Meanwhile, Ian proved to us that petrol buggies should definitely be a thing of the past!

Weekend competitions

Congratulations to all the gents who played in the finals at the weekend. It was nice to see some support for them out there on the course on Saturday.

The finals were followed by the Maci Craddock Fundraiser held at the club with the fantastic Motown & Soul singer Frankie Heart. The evening raised a fabulous £ 2125 for the benefit of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in memory of Maci. My friend Susan (Maci’s mum) and I would like to thank most sincerely everyone who supported this event. A great night was all by all.

Announcement

As we seem to speedily head towards the end of the season it is announced that Mrs Gillian Littlewood will take over as Lady Captain in November. My best wishes are sent to Gillian and I am sure she will receive the support of all our members.

Cover story

This might sound a little complicated but just give us a chance on this one...

Urethane vs Ionomer? Both are materials used on the cover of golf balls but what is the difference between them and how does each affect your game?

TaylorMade TP5 - Urethane cover

You'll usually find that balls at the premium end of the market, like the TP5 and TP5x, have Urethane covers due to its noticeably softer feel and fantastic feedback, which is why they're the go-to choice for many Tour pros.

TaylorMade Project (s) - Ionomer cover

On the other hand, Ionomer is cheaper to produce which is why you'll find them on less expensive balls, like the Project (s). These balls tend to spin less off the tee, which is why Ionomer features on balls that prioritise distance over feel.

A warmer option
