President’s Prize Last weekend was the President’s weekend, with the top 16 playing another 18 holes this weds evening. The course was set up perfectly by the green staff Danny and Simon, the greens were running as fast as I’ve ever seen them, over the past few months they have both worked tirelessly and with the help of wet warm weather, the course is fantastic, well-done guys.
Leading the way was Steve ‘Seve’ Dodsworth with a 65, closely followed by Dave Webster and Danny Stott with 67s, unfortunately for Steve he’s away on business so can’t make Wednesday, with only three shots between the top ten, I think Wednesday will be very interesting and maybe a winner from 3/4 shots behind.

Play-Off Results What a result for Paul - only last week he came into the shop asking to book some lessons as he had lost all control...what a game this is, he didn’t book a lesson and then went and shot 68 and 65 to win the Presidents prize, great stuff, he beat the field by three shots. Winning Division one was Danny Stott 136 and in second place my elder assistant Sidey bringing back the years with a total of 137, all the work in the Simulator is paying off. Division two was won by Trevor Armitage 140, can’t see it been long before he loses a couple of shots on his handicap. Best Gross was won by Scot Minto who shot two 69s, the great form continues well done Scot.

Clark’s Am-Am and Seniors Open There is still time to enter a team for the Clark’s Am-Am on Friday, 12 July. The cost is £40 per team which includes a bacon sandwich with tea/coffee on arrival, a pint from our sponsors after the round too. The timesheet for the seniors has just opened, and plenty of time slots available, the cost is £20 per pair includes bacon sandwich with tea/coffee on arrival. This year I have lowered the age to Over 50’s and prizes paid out to Overall Winners and 1st & 2nd prizes in 3 age categories.

Lady Captain’s News At last, a weekend with good weather for golf albeit a little breezy on Sunday. I’m sure Mr President, Johnny, was happy to see the sun shining over Hanging Heaton for his comp. On this occasion I chose to golf on Saturday, unfortunately, my poor performance on the 9th prevented me from qualifying. Although my playing partners, Ian Booth and Shaun Dunford, seemingly enjoyed my performance stating that my putting dance on the 9th (yes dance not stance) was something they will remember for a long time. Julie Oates and Jane Tingle both came in with a nett 77, Julie coming first with the better back 9. Well done ladies. I was grateful that my tee shot at the 10th coincided with the Juniors heading to the 1st allowing me to wish them luck. It appears the rum supplied by Mr President flowed well and the outdoor seating was rather comfortable as not only did I see the juniors leave but witnessed their return! Our thanks are passed to Johnny for arranging a good weekend. Sadly, the ladies section is not represented this year on Wednesday evening but we’ll be back next year. My best wishes to all who are in the playoff.
As we passed by the Elliott’s on Saturday, it was noted their garden was decked out and ready re the celebrations of a special birthday. Belated birthday greetings to you June, I hope you enjoyed your party. A special comp approaches for the ladies this weekend in the form of the Sue Golembiewski trophy. Sadly one that I am not available to play. Good luck to the ladies and please know that I will be thinking of you all and of our dear friend Sue. Happy golfing. Judi B

Wilson D7 7 Iron Challenge Over the last couple of weeks, I have run a distance challenge in the Simulator, looking at who could have the biggest gap in distance between their own 7-iron and the Wilson Staff D7 7 iron.
The winner was Graham Finch with a massive total distance of 22 yards his own Cobra 7-iron went 142 yards, but the Wilson D7 went 164 yards - that’s nearly two clubs longer. Finchy wins three dozen Wilson Staff DX2 golf balls. Thanks to Wilson for giving our members the opportunity to win this competition and to donate the three dozen golf balls.

Reading between the lines |
One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts. |
High and low Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball. 360 picture
If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read. Utilise our expertise
To really master the art of putting, book a coaching session with us and benefit from our years of experience as PGA professionals. Here we will teach you the in-depth steps to improving your green reading skills.
