Competition news

Sleights Cup and Tiger Medal

It was another weekend of great scoring, with Dave Greenwood winning the Sleights Cup with a nett 62; Dave finished five clear of Wayne Fortis and the in-form Paul Eddings. In the Tiger Medal, our Handicap Chairman came out on top with a nett 64, Alan has been playing well over the last few weeks, and came out on top over the weekend beating Mick Foster on the back nine. Mick has also been showing good form over the last few weeks.

Well done to all the winners over the weekend.

Clark’s Am-Am - Friday, 12 July

There are still a few tee times available - the cost is £40 per team which includes a bacon sandwich with tea/coffee on arrival and a pint after play - times to be booked in Pro Shop.

Seniors Pairs

The timesheet for the Seniors Pairs will open on Wednesday, 3 July – the cost is £20 per pair which includes a bacon sandwich with tea/coffee on arrival. The competition is for any golfer over 50, with an overall first prize and then three age category prizes, plus spot prizes, tee times to be booked and paid for in the Pro Shop.

Ladies news

A message from the Ladies Captain...

Looking at the forecast, it looks like the drizzle and rain is behind us. Let’s hope so. I managed to escape from Dewsbury for a few hours on Saturday whilst our ladies played the Past Captain’s Comp. And in good form ‘Miss recently passed it’ Julie Oates won coming in with a nett 74 with Jennifer hot on her heels with a nett 76.

Well done ladies.

Sunday/Monday brought the June Elliott trophy. I am delighted to report the results as follows:

1st Judi Brooke - 34 points.
2nd Oates - 29 points.

Thank you to June for supplying the lovely refreshments, very much enjoyed by all. Good luck to everyone who is playing this weekend and thanks in advance to Mr President for the competition.

Fingers crossed the sun will shine down on Hanging Heaton and its golfers.

Tour news

The Open Championship

Only a couple of weeks before the final Major of the year, The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. It’s been 68 years since it was last held there, the course is very tight and quirky, I’m hoping for a European winner, not sure this course will suit some of the top power hitters, my tip for the event is each way bet on Ian Poulter. I will start collecting entries for the Pro Shop Open draw this weekend, usual cost £5 per entry.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
