Welcome to this week's edition to Hanging Heaton Golf Club's weekly newsletter. I hope that the weather is treating you kindly back home; I'm having a Mythos writing this week's newsletter. Enjoy the read. |
Isaac causes a Storm in the North East... The juniors headed north to Hartlepool Golf Club to play in my good friend Stormy’s Junior Open. All the lads playing did respectable scores and we had one awesome score by Isaac Murray finishing second in the 11 to 14 age group with a score of 63 nett seven under par. A great result with over 140 juniors around the country entering this popular event, hopefully this start will spur our juniors on for a great season of victories, we have a section now of seven Junior golfers all with club handicaps and I’m sure if they all put the practice in can easily be in single/low teens handicap by the end of the summer.

Some more news from the North East... This weekend our Scratch Captain Scot Minto played in the Cleveland Salver finishing tied eighth after 36 holes. Well done Scot a nice top ten start for the year, hopefully the good form will continue...

Rabbits Presidents weekend By the sounds of it, the Sunday golfers got the better of the conditions over the weekend. The winner John Newsome (the most popular past Captain in the club so he says), won the event with a nett 67. Over the last few months, he and his partner have shown some good form in the fourballs and now individually he comes out on top. He had a motto when he was Captain that any member who won a club competition; he would have their legs off meaning their handicap would be reduced quite dramatically, so I think he should be pulled at least two shots and the handicap committee need to remember that he doesn’t represent the club in any outside team events so possibly they could knock off another shot, sorry John. Looks like it’s coming back round to bite you on the A### pal. On the Saturday, a couple of guys in tough conditions both shot a 70 nett well done to Paul Ratcliffe and Steve Shaw...

Ladies weekend results Further congratulations are in order for Stuart Wailes and Jeff Pygott. They played and won their second round of the Daily Mail on Tuesday. Once again, I was on the course when they played – perhaps I need to check my diary for their next round. Well done gents. Thank you to Mr Rabbits President for the weekend comp.
The results for the ladies are as follows:
- First place - Debbie Spendler - 72 nett.
- Second place - Jane Tingle - 74 nett.
Well done girls.
Following a rather unpleasant Saturday, thankfully the weather settled for our ladies playing on the Sunday and Monday.
We had two fourballs playing at Howley on Monday in their Open Texas Scramble. Sadly, we didn’t get into the prizes but the event was enjoyed by all. A full summer ahead of us now and one I’m looking forward to in my role of Lady Captain. Hopefully it will be filled with nice golf weather and good golf results for everyone at HHGC. Happy golfing. Fast Fives is back Starting on Wednesday, 8 May, the fast Fives will start teeing off between 4pm to 6pm and this year we will be playing the event on a Monday and Wednesday giving members more opportunity to play in the event. It’s the same costs as last year; £5 to enter and £1 every five holes you played. Members that couldn’t make the finals evening last year you don’t need to pay the £5 entry, I have a list of members who paid and didn’t play in finals night so ask in the shop if you can’t remember.
|
Invitation Weekend The time sheets will open on Wednesday, 8 May for this popular weekend. The cost is £20 per member/guest but if you invite two guests over the weekend, you get a £10 discount costing you £30.
|
Will you be coming? Also, on Saturday, 8 June, the Lady Captain has personally booked a Sadie; a female soloist known for her songs from female legends of the 50s and 60s throughout the decades in the evening. Tickets will be available soon at £5 and this could fit in well as you can invite guests and their partners for the evening.

Another successful ball fitting... Last week I had Ian Booth in for a ball fitting. Again, the results were incredible and below I have attached a chart for you all to look at and hopefully understand what effect each golf ball can have on any individuals swing and ability. |
When you look at the chart, there are so many differences in ball speed, spin rates, carry and total distance. In the end, the last two balls performed the best and there was not too much difference between them. The biggest difference is the cost of the balls; the Titleist Pro V1 is £45 per dozen and the TaylorMade Project S £20 per dozen. Obviously £25 between the two balls, Ian then hit three 7-irons with each ball, the distance was very similar but the Titleist had more backspin creating higher RPM which would offer a softer landing on the greens very close, but after watching Ian hit shots and his results his ball flight is very flat with quite a lot of right to left spin again this has an effect in spin with less loft in his hand he creates very low spin. Ian is going to trial each ball over the next couple of weeks, and then decide he’s going to let us know how he’s gone on in one of my newsletters over the coming weeks.

Be honest, how much thought do you put into the golf ball that you play? Probably not as much you do your clubs but considering the ball is in play on every single shot, using any old thing that you find at the bottom of your bag could be leaving you paddling uphill. |
| Which Titleist ball to play? |
|
The first question to ask is: What do you want from your ball? Obviously, getting the thing in the hole in as few shots as possible is the ultimate goal, but there are many paths to getting there. There are balls that offer impressive distance, such as the Titleist Velocity, whilst others that provide incredible feel, such as DT TruSoft. But if you are looking for total performance without sacrificing on any one element, Titleist's Pro V1, Pro V1x and AVX balls are truly phenomenal. With subtle differences between each, this is where having a chat with a member of our PGA qualified team will have you leaving with the best ball for your game - what will yours be? |
