3-1 to USA first morning and we’re all thinking here we go no chance...but a combination of the wind picking up and good old Jim putting Big Phil out in the afternoon foursomes; a great golfer but one who can hit it all over the place when the format you’re playing needs straight hitting golfers made it far easier for us in the afternoon 4-0 to Europe, last achieved in 1989. Saturday morning, the USA team looked like a group of punch-drunk boxers going back out trying to get some points back, 3-1 to Europe. Tommy and Frankie uncontainable beating Tiger and Patrick Reed again...afternoon the USA got a better result 2-2 leaving us 10-6 up going into the singles. Sunday morning, and the noise of Rory, Rory on the 1st tee, the crowd and players alike all pumped up ready to go. Unfortunately, our strongest two players Rory and Justin didn’t get the points, quite incredible showing the form up to this event, but we had ten more great gladiators out there going to prove us wrong. Casey getting a fantastic half against Koepka with being one down with two to play. Jon Rahm beating Tiger 2&1, and what a celebration after holing his last putt. Poor Tommy rang out of gas but against a player with incredible ability Tony Finau. Then came the Postman...words can’t describe this man just Mr. Ryder Cup beating the World Number one, Dustin Johnson two up. Now we could breathe... My good friend caddying for Thorbjorn Dom helping his player stuff Jordan Spieth 5&4. Records are broken as Sergio beats Rickie Fowler 2&1 to become the Highest European Points scorer. Another record as Frankie becomes the first player to win five out of five, beating the out of sorts Mickelson (think I could have given him a game Sunday). Tyrrell, unfortunately lost to Patrick Reed (Mr USA Ryder Cup), but I thought him shushing the crowd when he won in jest was very sporting and got a good response from all the fans. The Iceman kicked some butt beating Bubba 5&4 and for the grandstand finish when all was won Alex Noren holed out on the 18th from what seemed to be about 80 feet to beat Bryson DeChambles. The great Dane had done it he had managed his team with the help of his vice captains to a great victory 17.5 – 10.5 unbelievable! I’m sure I will get to hear some great stories from Dom about the party on Sunday night. |
